Yesterday, in a review of some ultra-portable headphones, we made the claim that size wasn’t everything. But there is still definitely something to be said for having a giant box under the Christmas tree- and now that’s it’s actually November, we can safely use the C-word without feeling too eager. This holiday season, if you’re looking for one of the biggest and boldest speaker systems, you can look no further than today’s piece of gear.
The Braven BRV-XXL isn’t just another portable Bluetooth speaker- it’s one of the largest we’ve seen that still comes with a handle and a rechargeable battery. With four drivers built in to push sound in multiple directions, the XXL also boasts an IPX5 waterproof rating, so it can shrug off some wind, rain, dirt and dust. And speaking of the battery, it’s also extra-large, a full 15,600mAh which should be enough to power your party’s playlist for ten to fourteen hours or so between charges, depending on volume and such.
Like many Bluetooth devices with big batteries, this one offers a USB port so you can charge your mobile device while you’re out and about. There’s a 3.5mm minijack input, and more unusually, a carrying strap with a bottle opener. At 18 pounds, it’s not the easiest speaker to lug around- you’ll almost wish it had wheels- but the trade-off is volume. The Braven BRV-XXL can get plenty loud, enough to be heard across a field, so it’s a sure bet that it’ll serve as an audio solution for your picnic or around the pool. We almost wish it had a built-in radio, as it seemed like a great fit for use out in the garage, on a patio or a rooftop.
We’ve seen several Braven speakers in the past, as well as other portable accessories, and they’ve always held up well to the abuse of regular use. This model features onboard bass and treble EQ adjustments, and the overall sound is pretty well-balanced, though a little light on bass. The BRV-XXL is punchy, with plenty of range and though it tilts more towards power than accuracy, it sounds like it looks- rugged and full-bodied.
