Disruptive products don’t have to be big or expensive, and they don’t need to change the world in a major way. They just need to, slowly but surely, make a mark on some aspect of your life. Bluetooth wireless is an example- the core components are often essentially invisible, buried in a multi-function chipset, but the technology itself has nonetheless become woven into the fabric of millions of devices. Headsets and keyboards and locating beacons all rely on it, but one of the most common uses is to play music when you want it, where you want it, without cords.
The VAVA Voom Bluetooth Wireless Speaker is a example of how a company can refine an idea and market it even in an already-crowded marketplace. The fact is that this portable sound system doesn’t do anything new- there aren’t any major feature differences, it isn’t smaller, and it’s certainly not better-looking than the competition. But it does do most everything right, leveling the playing field and proving you don’t need to break new ground to still produce convincing gear.
There is NFC connectivity for quick and easy pairing, the expected 3.5mm minijack for wired use, and the Bluetooth version includes aptX for better-quality audio. An internal, 6700 mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of music playtime, and weighing in at only 850 grams it is also pretty portable too. Whether you’re looking to listen to some tunes in the kitchen, bathroom, office, or den, you can grab your VAVA Voom and take it with you. It isn’t weatherproof or waterproof, so we wouldn’t suggest taking it out in the rain. We liked the three different EQ settings- the default, neutral Standard, a Party mode which boosts the low end, and a wider-field Surround sound.
That said, this isn’t the loudest or broadest or most accurate speaker around- the dual 5W primary drivers and 10W subwoofer won’t quite overcome a loud room but should fill a smaller one nicely. We’ve seen and heard quite a lot of models in the past, but few portable battery-powered ones have the same blend of features and offer decent sound in this price range.
